2017-2018. The concept of a “Recovery Archive” was directly inspired by my dear friend and colleague Marie-Pier Frigon’s “Intoxication Chronicles,” now since removed from the web. The original archive started in June 2017 as I received my Zoloft prescription. I then tracked my mental health for a year through selfies and journaled prose. Freshly graduated from art school, choosing selfies as a medium was directly in reaction to the school’s “no phone photography” policy, as well as the stigma against selfies in fine art and in society as a whole (especially when taken by young women.) I originally presented them together as self-contained slides one after the other in Windows Photo Viewer. There the viewer moved through at their own pace, each piece floating in the neutral grey of the photo viewer, isolated yet continuous. The series was then shared and adapted to Tumblr and Instagram, inspired by the now-defunct @dearcatcallers account, another kindred spirit turning selfies into candid exposés. Like they say #themediumisthemessage. I then installed it at the Gallery for Broken Hearts in 2018, printed on square sheets and held in an intimate box. It has since transformed as NEO//RECOVERY.
